Buddha Statues & Gestures: February Exhibition at Skiptvet Library

Updated: 2 days ago

Featuring: Walking Buddha ( Līlā mudra) A symbol of Mindfulness in Motion and Radiant Leadership

Following our January opening, Skiptvet Buddhist Monastery and Skiptvet Library are honoured to continue our exploration of Buddhist art and symbolism. For February, we shift our focus to the Walking Buddha (Līlā Mudra), a dynamic masterpiece representing 'Mindfulness in Motion' and the radiant presence of leadership through peace.

Grace, Presence, and the Art of the Step

In our second feature for the Buddha Statues & Gestures exhibition, we explore one of the most unique and elegant forms in Buddhist art: The Walking Buddha.

Unlike most statues that depict the Buddha in stillness, this posture captures a dynamic moment—the Buddha in the midst of a journey, bringing wisdom and peace from one place to another.

Understanding the Gesture: Walking Buddha The Anatomy of a Peaceful Step

  • The Movement: The Buddha is captured mid-stride. His right foot is slightly raised, poised to touch the ground, symbolizing a continuous path of progress and the importance of "staying on the move" in one's spiritual growth.

  • The Hands:

    • Right Hand: Hangs naturally by his side in a relaxed, swinging motion, showing a state of complete ease and lack of tension.

    • Left Hand: Raised to chest level and held forward. This is a variation of the Abhaya Mudra (dispelling fear), signalling that even while moving, the Buddha offers protection and reassurance to those he meets.

The Story Behind the Step

A Radiant Return

This specific posture commemorates a legendary homecoming. After a period of solitude and offered teaching to his mother in a distant, peaceful realm, the Buddha returned to rejoin his community and disciples. As he arrived at the gates of the city Sankassa, he was met by a massive gathering of followers, led by his close disciple, Venerable Sāriputta, who spent his rain retreat there.

The gesture highlight three extraordinary aspects of this moment:

  • Exquisite Grace: The Buddha displayed a walking style so balanced and refined that it became a teaching in itself, demonstrating how to move through the world with perfect composure and dignity.

  • Supreme Radiance: It is said that the Buddha’s inner peace was so profound that his body emitted a beautiful radiance. This natural "glow" was so bright and captivating that it completely overshadowed the lights and ornaments of the great procession accompanying him.

  • Unrivaled Joy: The sight of the Buddha walking toward the city was a scene of beauty beyond description. It brought an overwhelming sense of delight and inspiration to the followers, reminding them that the path to peace is one we walk with every step.
