The Buddha image has the characteristic of stepping forward (walking):
-
The appearance shows the right foot raised, about to step.
-
The right hand hangs down in a swinging motion.
-
The left hand is raised to chest level and held forward in a gesture of walking.
Origin of this Mudrā
This posture commemorates the event when the Buddha descended from the Tāvatiṃsa Heaven, accompanied by a host of deities and Brahmās who came to escort him.
The procession stopped at the gate of Sankassa City, where Venerable Sāriputta was spending the Rains Retreat.
The Buddha displayed an exquisite walking style and a beautiful radiance that completely overshadowed the light of the accompanying deities and Brahmās. It was a scene of beauty beyond description, which brought great joy and delight to the Buddhist followers awaiting his arrival.
