About the event
In January 2026, Skiptvet Buddhist Monastery, in collaboration with Skiptvet Library, is honored to present an exhibition dedicated to the art and meaning of Buddha statues. We begin our series with one of the most revered images in Buddhist culture: The Emerald Buddha (Phrabuddha-maṇīratana-paṭimākara).
Why the Emerald Buddha? The Emerald Buddha symbolizes spiritual purity, protection, and prosperity. Although named "Emerald," the original statue is masterfully carved from a single piece of jade. It represents the Buddha’s enlightenment and serves as a powerful guardian of the nation and its people.
Understanding the Gesture: Samādhi (Meditation) The Emerald Buddha is depicted in the Samādhi Mudra (The Posture of Meditation):
The Hands: Both hands are placed face-up on the lap, with the right hand resting on top of the left.
The Legs: The right shin is placed over the left shin.
