Origin of this Mudrā
The Sammā-sambuddha (Perfectly Enlightened One) passed away into final Nibbāna on the full moon day of the Visākha month (the 6th lunar month), one year before the Buddhist Era began.
The cremation was held at the Makutabandhana-Cetiya in the city of Kusinārā, in the Malla Kingdom, on the 8th day of the waning moon of the 6th month (Atthami pūjā).
Three months after the cremation was completed, the assembly of monks held the First Buddhist Council (Sangāyanā) to compile the Pāli Canon. The first council took seven months to complete.
